Description
The Galatians had welcomed Paul with open arms and had received him, indeed, "as an angel of God" (Gal. 4:14). But that hospitable attitude did not last. They became prejudiced against Paul by false teachers who persuaded them to embrace "another gospel" (1:6). They had been "bewitched," Paul said (3:1) and had become as ready to "bite and devour one another" (5:15) as they were to change teachers and gospels. The Galatians were brave and enthusiastic, but they were susceptible to quick impressions and sudden changes.
Yet Paul loved them. He was not the kind of man to write them off just because false teachers had hypnotized them. No, indeed! Paul's response was to seize his pen and dash off this letter, perhaps for first of all his letters. In so doing, he has done us a service, too, because we still have those among us who would like to make us bow to legalism, Judaism, or some other kindred error. Join author John Phillips as he takes you verse by verse through the Epistle to the Galatians!
The John Phillips Commentary Series is designed to provide pastors, Sunday school teachers, and students of the Scripture with doctrinally sound interpretation that emphasizes the practical application of Bible truth. Working from the familiar King James Version, Dr. Phillips not only provides helpful commentary on the text, but also includes detailed outlines and numerous illustrations and quotations. Anyone wanting to explore the meaning of God's Word in greater depth - for personal spiritual growth or as a resource for preaching and teaching - will welcome the guidance and insights of this respected series.
John Phillips (1927-2010) served as assistant director of the Moody Correspondence School as well as director of the Emmaus Correspondence School, one of the world's largest Bible correspondence ministries. He also taught in the Moody Evening School and on the Moody Broadcasting radio network.
